Memory Enrichment

Thoughout human history tales and stories have been used as a way to remember important facts and details not nesseserily attributed to the story itself. Quite often the more dramatic or funny the tale is the more it sticks in our minds. I vividly remember a trigonometry lesson where we were told that “The Old Arab Sat On The Camel And Hiccupped” as a way to remember the association the trigonomic functions of Tan, Sine and Cosine to the fraction of two sides of a triangle. Much of the rest of those lessons are now a faded memory, but the poor Arab and his hiccupping camel stick firmly in my mind. Why? The brain loves to use imagination. It relates much more to imaginative thoughts than it does to cold repetition.

For instance if I wanted you to remember a shopping list of A loaf of Bread, A bunch of Flowers, 2 Pineapples, Margarine, A can of Cat Food, a roll of Cellotape, some Pasta, 4 chicken fillets and some Loo Roll, you might find it difficult at first. But if I suggested we make a bizarre story involving these elements, you are much more likely to remember them.

Walking though town you see a man with an entire loaf of bread in his mouth. As he’s passing a flower shop, he picks up a bunch, and pays for them with 2 pineapples. The flowershop owner has margarine all over his fingers and drops the 2 pineapples, which fall on the floor and a can of cat food falls out of one of the pineapples. The flowershop owner quickly grabs some cellotape to mend the pineapples. The flowershop owner has a cat whos fur is made of pasta. The can then opens the cat food, which has 4 chicken fillets inside. Once the cat has finished easting the fillets messily, the owner wipes its mouth with a bit of loo roll.

Now, I would bet that if you try an remember that list now or even a couple of days from now, you would still remember the list.. in order. This is a very simple memory technique and is used by many of the world most famous memory athletes to perform such tasks as remembering the contents and order of several shuffled decks of playing cards. I can teach you several even more powerful techniques that can be used in different situations to recall information quickly and reliably. I can also help you recall information you are not consciously aware of.
